Random Thought #53 - Lipstick & Soup Don't Mix

This time last week I was at my work Christmas party.

Actually that's not strictly true, it was an afternoon event (started at 12.30pm) so at this time I was preparing to vomit as I had drunk too much in a very short space of time (normally I pace myself a bit better).

But anyway before heading out I had put on make-up including lipstick. It was a reddish lipstick that wasn't too dark but I wanted the lipstick to last so not only was I using a lipstick that claimed to be long lasting but I also used lip liner, blotted and applied powder in order to make it last.

One bowl of soup later and I don't know why I'd bothered with lipstick - every time I put the spoon back in to the bowl a thin line of lipstick appeared in my soup.

It even took the lip liner off. In the past I've used lip liner so it wouldn't be as noticeable when the lipstick wore off.

So it was either my lip liner and 'long lasting' lipstick aren't worth **** or potato and leek are actually fantastic make-up removers.

I don't fancy testing the latter theory by using soup on my eye make-up so maybe I'll just go with the former theory - what do you think?

More Costume Looks

Last week I posted some zombie make-up tutorials I had recently come across on YouTube, so this week I thought I'd post some of the other costume looks I had come across.

Firstly how realistic do these spiders look!

A Zombie Horde

I meant to post this last week... but then forgot.

As we are in the month of October there are quite a few costume make-up tutorials appearing on YouTube.

So I thought I'd post some of the zombie ones I had come across recently.

Now this last one might divide opinion as some people say that Evil Dead is a zombie movie others say it isn't... but the make-up looks pretty zombieish to me (I have yet to see Evil Dead).

Where Have I Seen That Colour Before?

Don't ever say I'm not random on this blog. Last week I posted about cyclists. And this week I'm posting about lipstick.

Before we start I know the photos aren't that great - lighting issues.

Now just a lately I've noticed a lot of bloggers and vloggers talking about Revlon Super Lustrous Lipstick in the colour Black Cherry.

A lot of people have said you can use it more like a stain if you don't want it full on dark.

So I tootled along to Boots to do a swatch. So I swiped it on the back of my hand and I liked it. It's a nice colour.

Revlon Super Lustrous Lipstick in Black Cherry
So I thought I'd buy it. But Boots had the wrong colour above the tester and I couldn't see it anywhere else. But then I looked at the colour again and thought... that colour looks familiar.

So I went home and rooted around in my lipstick collection until I found this:

NYX Round Lipstick in Snow White
What did I say about the lighting - it refused to be consistent!

So this is NYX Round Lipstick in Snow White. Now in order to compare the two I did a swatch of the Revlon one on a tissue and brought it home to compare against the NYX one.

As you can see the NYX one is a teeny tiny bit redder than the Revlon one but it probably won't be that noticeable if you use it like a stain... plus the NYX one is cheaper :)

A Ban On Both Ye Shopping Addictions

When it comes to shopping I like to think that I control my spending quite well. As a natural born bargain hunter I tend to stick to sales and look for offers – I love a good bargain!

I try to customise things to make them my own, or make them fit better, or last longer. I’ll admit it is a very a bit of a tight squeeze in my wardrobe at the moment. But the pile of sewing/customisations is slowly but surely getting smaller.

I recently realised that there were two smaller ‘collections’ from my shopping life that were starting to grow quite considerable. Now they are the type of things that don’t take up too much room but I realised that it couldn’t go on forever. So I have instigated a ban on myself. Until I use some of them up I will not buy anymore.

The first of these ‘collections’ is lip balms. I have some I use regularly but I seem to keep buying new ones before I’ve used the others that I have.

So here are the lip balms I use regularly:

And here are the ones that I have waiting in the wings that I have yet to use.

Now the second of these collections is a little bit scarier. It is nail varnish. Long time visitors to my blog may recall my post about me having too many nail varnishes. Well my collection has changed and grown since then.

This photo refused to come out the right way round!

Now some of you might be thinking that that isn’t all that many nail varnishes. Well I haven’t finished yet. Those are just the nail varnishes that I have actually used and liked – the tried and tested group you might say. The nail varnishes that I own that I haven’t yet used on my nails is quite a bit bigger.

Don’t say I didn’t warn you!

So until further notice I am no longer buying lip balms and nail varnishes.

However if other people want to buy them for me… well that’s a different matter entirely :P

U is For... Urban Decay

I love the make-up brand Urban Decay.

I just thought I'd let you know. I don't have much else to say about Urban Decay other than I love their products... so I'll just show you my Urban Decay 'collection'. (Aargh! I used the word 'just'!)

Obsessed? Moi? Never! ;-)

I particularly like their 24/7 Glide on Eyeliner - which I have in several colours, as you can see.

I used to like visiting my local Boots to see if there was anything new, or to sample/test the colours. So imagine my dismay when they decided in their infinite wisdom to get rid of the Urban Decay counter. They kept a different make-up brand's counter (which I will not name but they probably know who they are). Oh yes they kept the counter where the assistants haunt the shop and leap on you in a completely different department when you are minding your own business. But they got rid of my favourite...

So now I have to order online if I want anything which does mean I can't test the colours on myself.

But I still love Urban Decay - and I haven't been paid to say that... unfortunately!

N is For... Nails

I decided to have a go at painting my nails recently in the retro/Dita Von teese style that has been seen recently.

It is based on the way women painted their nails in the 1940s - the half moon was left bare.

However the modern take on the 1940s nail involves painting the half moon in a contrasting colour as seen on Dita Von Teese.

Now as you can see the usual practice is to paint the half moon white and the rest of the nail red.

However given the random nature and colour of my blog I decided to put my own twist on this trend.

So my nails are painted in two different shades of PURPLE!

Now my nails are far from perfect however I think that they aren't bad for a first attempt - hopefully practice will make perfect.

My left hand is neater than my right but that is because I am right handed - and even when I paint my nails one colour the left is always neater than the right.

I Have Too Many! Part 3: Eye Pencils

I can't believe I forgot about my eye pencils [I say eye pencils because some of them are not strictly eyeliners, but are for eyes].

So I also have far too may eye pencils, however they do take up less room than my lipsticks and loads more space than my nail varnishes.

I would show you my shoe collection [which takes up more room than my eye pencils, lipsticks, and nail varnishes combined]. However that would require me having to get them all out of the wardrobe and then out of the boxes and line them up...and I can't really be bothered...maybe some day but not anytime soon.

I Have Too Many! Part 2: Nail Varnish

And so to the second part of my slight obsession with make-up...nail varnish.

I haven't painted my nails recently...I keep meaning to and then never get round to it. But it doesn't stop me buying more. Now unlike lipsticks you can have just about any colour on your nails without people thinking you are weird. For instance if I wore yellow lipsticks I would get more than my fair share of second looks from people.

Anyway to the picture - they are not as neatly lined up as my lipsticks were...but then you wouldn't have been able to see as many of the colours!

I could have just put them in one long line...but then I would have to stand so far back you wouldn't have been able to see the colours.

I Have Too Many! Part 1: Lipstick

I like make-up...a lot. And the two main areas of make-up I have the most of are lipsticks and nail varnishes.

For those who aren't in to lipsticks and will be horrified at the number that I have I suggest you look away now.

I just have the odd one or two don't I? Now for those of you who don't know much about make-up you may think that they are all a similar colour. But to those of us in the know they are all very different.
Same lipsticks, different angle!

As I have always said a woman can never have too many lipsticks [or nail varnishes, shoes or handbags].
