Z Is For...

My theme for the A To Z Challenge 2014 is things I’ve learnt from movies. Some are serious, some are silly. And some I was clutching at straws.

I’ve tried to find clips of said movies where possible. So if I couldn’t find a clip and you haven’t seen the movie… well you’ll have to take my word for it.

 Z is for Zombieland.

The plot:

A shy student trying to reach his family in Ohio, and a gun-toting tough guy trying to find the Last Twinkie and a pair of sisters trying to get to an amusement park join forces to travel across a zombie-filled America.

And for my final A To Z post for 2014 what I learnt was that practical jokes can go very, very wrong.

X Is For...

My theme for the A To Z Challenge 2014 is things I’ve learnt from movies. Some are serious, some are silly. And some I was clutching at straws.

I’ve tried to find clips of said movies where possible. So if I couldn’t find a clip and you haven’t seen the movie… well you’ll have to take my word for it.

 X is for X-Men.

Plot:

Two mutants come to a private academy for their kind whose resident superhero team must oppose a terrorist organization with similar powers.

I learnt from X-Men that you don't have to necessarily be nice in order to prove you are friendly. :)

Just to set the scene - there is a mutant in the vicinity who can impersonate anyone she meets. (this movie is rated 12 in the UK)

W Is For...

 W is for War Of The Worlds.

Plot:

As Earth is invaded by alien tripod fighting machines, one family fights for survival.

What I learnt from this movie was that Morgan Freeman knows how to begin and end a movie (and H. G, Wells knows how to write a story). Morgan's not even in it (as far as I saw) but his narration gives the opening and ending scenes an edge.

This video contains the opening and ending narration however it doesn't have the actual footage (although as far as I remember it zooms in to the Earth during the opening and zooms out at the ending). The ending narration starts at about 1.15.

V Is For...

 V is for Van Helsing.

The plot:

The notorious monster hunter is sent to Transylvania to stop Count Dracula who is using Dr. Frankenstein's research and a werewolf for some sinister purpose.

What I learnt from Van Helsing is that monks and friars are different things.

I've got a couple of examples which I couldn't actually find a clip of. In fact in the trailer I don't think I saw Carl the Friar at all so you'll have to take my word for it. (this movie is rated 12 in the UK).

Carl: [while stocking Van Helsing's kit for the trip to Transylvania] I don't know. You could blind your enemies, char-broil a herd of chargind wildebeests - use your imagination.

Van Helsing: No, I'm going to use yours - you're coming with me.

Carl: Oh, to hell and be damned I am!

Van Helsing: Carl, you just cursed! Not well mind you but you're a monk. You shouldn't curse at all.

Carl: Actually I'm just a friar so I can curse all I want... dammit!

Fast forward a bit...

Carl: [after saving the woman from the vampire children] They've all died.

Barmaid: Oh, thank you! You saved me.
[kisses him on the cheek]
Barmaid: How can I repay you?
[Carl leans in and whispers something in her ear]
Barmaid: But you can't do that! You are a monk!

Carl: Actually, I'm a just a friar. 

U Is For...

U is for Under Siege.

Basic plot:

A former SEAL, now cook, is the only person who can stop a gang of terrorists when they seize control of a US Navy battleship.

What I learnt from this movie is that you should never underestimate the cook.
