Level Up - Fun & Games

Today is the day of the Level Up Blogfest hosted by Mithril Wisdom and Geek Banter.

All you have to do to take part is:

...talk about a game you play or used to play; tell us how it works and share your love of the game with the rest of us. It can be any kind of game you like, from World of Warcraft to Hopscotch, from Monopoly to Blackjack and everything else in between. Tell us what you love about that game.

I really wanted to choose a classic game; something from my childhood perhaps. But no, it was not to be. I kept coming back round to a game that I currently play... more or less every day. Not all day you understand, just a bit to blow off steam sometimes.

That game is Call Of Duty.

Call Of Duty is a series of video games - war and battle based games. Guns and grenades type of thing.

I have played Call Of Duty 4: Modern Warfare, Call Of Duty: World At War, Call Of Duty: Modern Warfare 2, Call Of Duty: Black Ops, Call Of Duty: Modern Warfare 3 and Call Of Duty: Black Ops II.

I've played the online version of them all except World At War. But my current favourites are the most recent two - Modern Warfare 3 and Black Ops II.

I like playing COD online the best. The regular version that is... not so keen on the zombie mode. But back to the things I like. I like the fact that you can go on the same mode, same map, same side (by that I mean within the game e.g. SAS, Spetsnaz, Mercs, FBI etc.) and the game will be different every time. Each time your team will be made up of different people - maybe you'll be up against someone who was on your team last time, maybe you'll be up against a whole new set of players.

You can play with and against people from all over the world... and some a little closer. The other week I was playing online when I heard someone mention that they were from the same town as me - of all the lobbies, in all the games...

COD online is fun, you can have a laugh. There's rivalry and comradeship. Of course you always get some pain-in-the-a*se who cheats (see moron class 4), or sends abusive messages (chillax it's only a game), or takes it a little too seriously (I SAID IT'S ONLY A GAME!), or irritates the hell out of you for whatever reason. But mostly they are an all right bunch.

I find that you have good days and bad days on COD. Some days I am on fire - my kill/death ratio is high (in my favour). I'm taking people out left, right and centre, winning games, unlocking awards, levelling up etc. And some days I just can't seem to hit anything. Even trying to shoot someone stood still right in front of me seems too much of a challenge.

And then there are the technical problems - like when you are in the middle of a game and the connection is lost (usually just after I've achieved something new or had a really good game - so it doesn't get added to my stats :( )

If you click the links at the top of the post you can go and visit the host blogs and find other game orientated posts to read.

And I'm going to leave you with a phrase that will probably mean very little to anyone who hasn't played COD: MW2 in campaign mode (or maybe if you've been in the military it might mean something).

Stay frosty.

@ Sandy Campbell - that's the thing about user names on COD, you never know whether you are playing against a man or a woman.

I'm guessing a lot of people assume I'm a guy on COD online

I've never played Call of Duty. I used to play Doom a long time ago back in the dark ages, and it was a lot of fun to play online.

I only got into CoD after playing World at War; and from that Black Ops (you guessed it; I'm a fan of the zombie maps). For a while I was a die hard Medal of Honour fan (after Frontline) but I think CoD takes it.

Thanks for entering the blogfest, Chippy!

@ Jamie Gibbs

I used to love playing Medal of Honour. I was a little worried about playing COD at first because my brother told me there were no medipaks... and I was highly dependent on my medipaks on MOH.

Good thing about online is that you can respawn immediately... straight back in to battle... except on Search and Destroy and Headquarters.

I've never played this, but it does sound like a good time. And I like the stay frosty phrase even if I don't completely understand it :P Thanks for joining in the blogfest, Chippy!

I'm not a gamer, but I have heard of COD. Those type of games seem complicated to play, but I've never played so I might be wrong. Thanks for sharing.

Another game my son has spent many an hour playing instead of doing his homework.

Just dropping by from the Level Up Blog fest. COD is one game where I become envious of other people playing it. I wish I could get even the basics down, haha.

The Call of Duty games are amazing. Time and again I've found myself in these massive firefights that make me happy that I've never had to participate in an actual war. Wow, they are intense! I miss my computer surround sound system, which crapped out, because that made playing Call of Duty even more intense. I'm way behind on the various iterations of this game but my future son-in-law has them all so I need to start borrowing them.
