A is For Abaft & Arlee!

Today is the first day of the Blogging From A To Z Challenge 2013.

And before I dive in to my theme for this year I think I should mention another 'A' - the founder of the Blogging From A To Z Challenge - Arlee Bird!

This is my third year participating in this challenge and I'd like to thank Arlee for starting this whole thing up - thanks Arlee! :) You can visit his blog by clicking here.

So anyway I revealed my theme a couple of weeks ago and so the very first word I came to in my dictionary that I didn't know was:

abaft adv, adj naut closer to the stern of a ship [Old English be by + æftan behind]

So there you go - you learn something new everyday - some of you may have already known what 'abaft' meant but I know I certainly didn't. It's one of those words where I think I've heard the word before but if I had heard it I had no idea what it meant.

See you tomorrow...

Interesting! I can't even remember hearing about it. There are all sorts of nautical terms like that, that have either slipped into wider usage, or are getting forgotten.

I stopped by as we are near on the A to Z Challenge list. Great idea for your theme. Happy blogging for the rest of April. :)

Great theme! I wish you all the best in the Challenge. My assistants will be able to visit more often, but as a co-host, I need to visit the whole list...thanks for understanding. Otherwise, this word nerd would be back here every day!

I love ships (my brother was a Navy officer) and I love learning new things. Nice post. Good luck with the challenge! I participated last year and had a blast!

I used to sail and I didn't know that. Stopping by from the A2Z (#149) and am now a new follower!

I lived on a boat for a large portion of my childhood (in England) and am therefore very familiar with this word. I am interested to see how many words you find that I don't know. I think of myself as being very 'up' on vocab, so its a kind of challenge to me.
